I was having a conversation with a friend about this and did quick research. Crime is usually highest July, August, and December. What I believe is going on now is the result of improper housing and support for mentally ill and homeless. This is a rough time of year for both. It'll calm down April-July.
It's certainly not like it was early late 80's/ 90's (which is a blessing, but still, it's way too overpriced and commercial here). I may leave within seven years. My parents are leaving, the family im the closest with left or never lived here. I'm building a strong spiritual foundation and getting as much education as possible. Can't imagine it being any more interesting that any other city in the US at this point.
