I never understood how Illmatic was rated higher than Cuban Linx

Good points but you do realize Cuban Linx was a movie on wax right? It was soo descriptive from beginning to end. Production wise yea it may have been the first time multi producers were used on Illmatic, but Rza's production on Cuban Linx RZA was really in a zone.

Do you think less of It Was Written then? It was a concept album...just like OBC4L sorta was.

I think the artform and execution is more important than whether or not what they are rapping about is true or false. It's not so much what you say, but how you say it no?

Love Illmatic, but I go back to Cuban much more. It's such a fukking beautiful album. Beats, rhymes, skits... I consider it the greatest hip hop album of all time.

Illmatic was dope it was too short and left me wanting more which is another reason why I say OB4CL>>>

Of course Illmatic was more reality based just look at the cover lol. But at the end of the day its all subjective and a matter of opinion.

to be fair, rae was more ready to drop an album than nas was. rae had a bit of experience with making an album and he was around other people that had experience as well. nas on the other hand was a first timer and illmatic wasn't even the way that it was intended to be released. didn't they say that illmatic was rushed simply because some bootleggers had the album on deck, ready to drop that shyt before it hit the streets?

no. I don't understand the comparison either. this is about illmatic (94) vs. cuban linx (95).

debut vs debut. not 1996 which was a whole different dimension.

artform and execution is awesome but if that was what was the automatic consensus then we wouldn't have people championing the sort of hiphop we have had in the mainstrea for ten years already.

all I was doing was answering the OPs question, I wasnt taking sides though I think illmatic is the better album. meanwhile I have heard cuban linx more times and probably have gave verbal intercourse and criminology over 100,000 listens each from tape to cd.

Can't go wrong with OB4CL

I go back to OB4CL a lot more too. Not a single weak track on there and the album is pretty cohesive, and it felt more complete. Rae and Ghost are one hell of a duo

Cuban Linx is just brilliant. From beginning to end. And it aged wonderfully. That album made me know that I will never stop loving hip hop music. It's that fukking good.
