he started that album off spittin' hard with "pray"

It's just that at this point Jay's voice became more high pitched and annoying at times.

I don't know, it's always been a toss up to me, I think Black Album has better Highs but AG is a better listen all the way through for the pure rap fan.

Personally Blueprint/Black Album are 1 and 2 for me, and American Gangster isn't touching Reasonable doubt

I have it ranked 3rd as well, behind Reasonable Doubt and The Black Album. It was definitely a step in right direction from Kingdom Come and it's one of Jay's most cohesive projects. While I think the Blueprint has superior production, I usually rank AG over it because I find AG to be more consistent and also better rapping-wise.

there was a lot of hype surroundin' that album and since the dust has settled, well, the dust has just settled

american gangster holds well and stands the test of time, the black album doesn't outside of a couple of songs like allure, justify my thug, encore, 99 problems, and threat

Not better than The Blueprint overall. It is better lyrically though.
