in '91, Master P sold his first album independently out the trunk of his car in Richmond,CA. he connected with Bay Area promoters & DJ's and went on a West Coast tour with Pac & Too $hort. he releases his second album in 1992, it sells 150K and then he moves back to New Orleans. in 1994, his third album sells 250K and his record label grossed more than $900,000. he then got a distribution deal that allowed him to receive a $ 375,000 advance check every album produced, 75 % wholesale price of every album sold, and ownership of the master recordings from his label including himself.
DJ Screw would go and press up 10,000-15,000 CDs and sell them at local Houston car shows alongside Lil' Flip and Flip claimed they would make so much money that they would have to count again to make sure it's the right amount.
Slim Thug left Swishahouse and began selling mixtapes at 17 and was a millionaire before he received a record label and released his debut album in '05.
