The Dells did most of the singing, but is it really based on the Dells?

When writing Townsend's first studio film The Five Heartbeats, Townsend and Wayans kept comedy an important aspect of the film, but also explored complex characters in a more dramatic way.[12] After extensive research with rhythm and blues-singing group The Dells, who were renowned for their four-decade career, Townsend used his film to depict a similar story, following the lives of three friends who aspire to musical stardom

Wiki, huh?:patrice:

I don't really have time to look this stuff all up, but I didn't think it was really based on the Dells. They were used as inspiration in addition to several other groups. Like I don't think most of the events depicted in the movie actually happened to the Dells.

Robert Townsend said it was based off several different groups....he basically pieced together a good story...:sas1:

This was my understanding too:yeshrug:

Eddie Kane Jr. was CLEARLY based on David Ruffin, so this isn't really all that accurate to say the movie was based on the Dells.

Edit: wait, did Otis Kane Jr. really dap this post? :laff:
