I grew up in family that really limited secular music outside of jazz, blues, classical. It wasn't until middle school that I was allowed to listen to hip hop. This was in the late 90's. By that time, Pac and Biggie were dead and I had missed most of the great hip hop acts of the 90's.
What we did listen to was Christian Contemporary. That's what I grew up on. We had a station called Shine FM. The music was good. But by the time I left for college, I had stop listening to Christian Contemporary with any regularity focusing more on hip hop.
The default for my family is still Christian Contemporary. So when I'm with them, I hear it and alot of times they're listening to K-Love.
I don't like K-Love. It's different from the Christian Contemporary I grew up on listening to Shine FM. The music production sounds watered down and simple. Lyrics are simple. Very "Hillsongish". And I remember Christian Contemporary before the "Hillsong" sound takeover. But most concerning, it comes off as propaganda for white Evangelicalism. And that's a no for me.

From what i heard radio play is essentially paid advertising by the studios. They not gonna play some random record and make someone famous like they do in those old timey movies about struggling musicians. They playing who they get paid to play.
