I taught myself how to navigate the next 5, 10, 20 years of my career. I get aggravated by the lack of career guidance from family, friends, schools and media about JOBS. People say “find a job. You need a job.”

What I want to know is who’s actually going to hire me after the interview? Better yet, let’s start with what are the job titles even called? What skills, certifications, or degrees do I need to become one?

It’s mind boggling sometimes. NO ONE seems to be able to explain the career hunting process or even steer you to smart resources on how to find a career. I feel like the jokes on me. Everyone’s happy online but they won’t share how they got it. “Just go network.” Better yet they tell you to invest when you have no job. I would invest but these jobs on Indeed want 5 interviews. What I’m wondering is how do you miss that much time from your current job to interview while they’re interviewing other candidates? There’s not a demand.

Plain and simple I lost my first sales job a few years back in fall of 2018. That hurt me. It was unplanned, but life isn’t fair. Instead of immediately jumping back into the workforce I took time off to read books and teach myself how to find a career. My ultimate goal is to make high income and never be without a job again.

In February of 2019 I had landed a high paying job in wealth management, but the employer marked me with a negative background check. My job offer got rescinded. I had lined that job up in November of 2018. So still I hopped back on the career website and went to my plan B route. Right now I’m working in insurance sales, which I started in June of 2019. It’s been amazing as my first career. I work for Geico. Started 2 weeks ago. I switched from an Allstate agency because Geico has better rates during Covid 19 and I can sell more policies with Geico right now. The phones at Geico don’t stop ringing. The job training is the best job training I’ve ever gotten. Since it’s not an army of new college grads I’m getting the attention in sales training I need to produce at high level. They're really looking for more people to hire. I expect to sell 100-200 policies a month during the pandemic.

People are going through worse times. A job is just a job. Despite my personal info I wanted to share knowledge about the job hunting process and how to use it. The Coli shares a lot of good advice. I wanted to share what I’ve learned that could help others make more money and start their careers.

I prefer to sort for the fastest growing occupations. You can sort by education level, income, or growth rate.

4. O-NET ONLINE - Fastest Growing Occupations (Government Site)
Bright Outlook Occupations
By now you should've picked your career already or narrowed your choices. I use this website to see what skills, certifications and knowledge I need. These are more detailed facts about the job. Better yet, they have lists of the fastest growing occupations too just like the BLS. It’s called bright out look occupations. You can find the link to the specific occupation through the BLS occupation profile also. Tons of information here. If you wanted to use another job search engine you can copy and paste the sample job titles.

5. Job Finder - O-NET ONLINE
Scroll to the bottom of the O-Net ONLINE page. Click find job. I’ve never found a more thorough job search engine online. I’m able to search by state for specific occupation. I can also search by state without occupation. It pulls relevant searches from indeed, career builder, national labor exchange, etc. Because you’ve search for careers that need workers and you can see when they posted the job or internship you can be first to apply and get the job with your skills.

Right now I’m getting my certificate in Spanish. I take classes on coursera for my certifications. The certifications are $250 for my 5 classes total and you get 5 paper certifications for completing the specialization. You need proof to bring the employer.

All starts with education. STEM will pick the career path for you as there are plenty of options. Increase your odds of hirability by developing the most skills in the most sought after fields. Networking is extremely important. I wish I had LinkedIn when I was starting out.

This shows that high school and college career counseling / guidance has failed

Who are you, bytch?

Coli always shows love and gives advice. I wanted to share what I've been learning.

The educational system has failed but it's just a job for them too. Unless you have mentors that show you careers it's hard to navigate what you ultimately want to become besides generic paths like lawyer, doctor, and teachers.

Op,

You may want to consider your exit plan or exit strategy from your career as well as what to do with your earnings.

I recommend setting up your affairs such that over time, income producing assets pay your bills. This frees up your earned income to buy more assets. If you lose your job or are laid off, you are unconcerned plus there is no stress about paying bills for they are already paid by your income producing assets. Keep expenses low and contained. Eschew "bad" debt.

In time, this will make working a choice rather than a necessity.

For most however, they will be tens (and some cases hundreds) of thousands of dollars in debt, thus a rapid debt reduction strategy is in order in that case.

Some of these resources I knew about, others I didn't. Thanks for sharing. Glad you're on your path. Did you have a felony in your background for the job to be rescinded?

No felonies. I gave information about previous termination so it was employment history. Since then I've passed 3 background checks in the last year now with insurance companies. But insurance is lowkey excellent sales training and despite the lowered income I'm loving everything I'm learning. I'm going to stay lowkey for a while, learn as much as possible about sales and then figure out what I really want to do, as a business career.

My thoughts are.....

Never let your enemies (these coli brehs) know your moves

Right now you created and got like 10 niccas hating you and 4 now pushing for or actively trying plan your downfall

I used to believe in that thinking. It's true in hip-hop. My main point is that you have to know what you really want to do. We aren't all the same. Yet, sometimes we just need to know where to look for the answers. Read the book 'Thinking for a Change' by John Maxwell. That's where this thread originated in my mind.

Friday I came home and another job offer was sitting in my inbox. I've only been at Geico 3 weeks.

The new job offer is sales for commercial real estate, which is hiring faster than average. Commercial real estate in NYC is a 7 figure job, but with the economy how it is I may have to wait or ask them to hold off.

Coli fam, I just wanted to follow up on this thread I created. I started driving Uber X. I stuck with the plan and sold car insurance at GEICO. It was nothing glorious. I utilized everything I’ve learned from GEICO, got my securities licenses, started at this entry-level finance job, and now working at Morgan Stanley in NYC with a full salary and benefits. I’m moving on to my dream job and dream career now. If you work hard, trust the process, and don’t care what other people think, you can do whatever you put your mind to do. I learn a lot from The Coli. I am not trying to flex but giving back some of the knowledge I picked up along the way. Put your head down and keep grinding. Don't settle. Keep going. Thanks for being my fam over the years.

Great post.

I would say just keep an open mind because things can shift in your life.
