How dont they? You open yourself up to more job opportunities, relationships and connections. African Americans are one of the only griups in America that only speak English. Plenty of Haitian Americans speak French or Creole., and first generation African Americans ( those who have just come here through their parents) also speak another language. My best friend is African and he speaks French as well.

If you're black and you wanna travel? sure learn a language a two but should all black americans learn another language? nah.

Yeah it came out way wrong but I understand what he meant. But as of right now? We don't need to learn another language to instill some sort of racial pride of distance ourselves from "whiteness".....right now.

I learned French and Arabic but I have forgotten most of it.

Never bothered to learn Spanish.

I agree with OP, learning how to speak Spanish, French, Chinese and Arabic put you an immediate step above White Americans, because being bilingual or trilingual is not an immediate skill most possess. A lot of them still struggle with English.
Traveling and building connections become immediately easier.
I already know I'm going to teach my kids more than one language growing up, just to get them a step ahead.
I would also like to learn Afrikaans too, but that may not happen for a while.
