I even made a topic about it before
http://www.thecoli.com/threads/why-...ntertainment-in-general-has-gone-down.233245/
But for the past year or so, I've had a change of heart, I actually think music is as good as it used to be
(with maybe the exception of R&B)
And believe it or not, I actually came to that realization by a video game : Fifa 15 - Fifa 16
The FIFA franchise video is one of the most popular games in the world, and every year, when a new one gets released,
they have a soundtrack that accompanies that video game with music from unknown or small artists
and man, let me tell you, allot of these joints, are extremely dope and even classic, but most people dont even know about them!
I went and looked at the youtube views of allot of these songs, and the views are relatively low.
So the argument that "you have to go and find good music" is actually really true...the joints on radio are dope too, but there's even more dope joints that you actually have to go and find.
From what I've been hearing, it seems like every generation always complains that music(or entertainment in general) has fallen off.
So why do we always think music/entertainment is getting worse? I have a few theories :
- Hindsight is 20/20 - We dont really appreciate things until its gone. Things retrospectively always gives us greater clarity. For some reason, human beings always glorify the past.
Many human beings are never in a completely satisfied state. Many of us think that things can always be better.
So the music that we are currently hearing right now, we are judging and feeling and processing it through our current emotional filters, through our current mood state.
But if we listen to the same music, 10 years from now (in our glorifying the past state)
we tend to regard it higher.
- Outdatedness - We all know that times changes and so do sounds. I think one of the other reasons why we glorify music from the past is because of the particular sounds from that era.
For example, if we hear a dope joint that was made in 2016, we'll simply appreciate it for being dope. But if we hear a dope joint from 1996, we tend to look at it differently, because sonically/musically it sounds different.
And because its so foreign to our ears, because its so foreign to what we hear in 2016, we tend to praise it more.
Whereas, if we where actually in 1996, listening to the same song, we wouldn't praise it as much, because musically, its no different then what we would always hear.
