I want to get a gun license for a handgun in NYS (non NYC)

Anybody in NYS outside of NYC have a pistol permit? I'm researching but figured i'd ask about the process here.

I don't have a gun but I know every countys rules are slightly different

just call the state police barracks or the sheriffs office can't remember which is responsible /
