Oprah built a billion dollar media empire in part by producing and starring in films like The Color Purple and Beloved, both ultimately packaged for mainstream (white) consumption.

Alice Walker won the Pulitzer Prize for The Color Purple in 1983, awarded by an all white committee. Toni Morrison received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1993, also an all white panel.
