From a Lakers insider on LG

Based on everything I have gathered (from both private and public sources), Pritchard isn't entirely lying, but he's fibbing all the same by underselling the truth. Here is the truth - George has made it clear that he intended to enter free agency (rather than signing an extension) and that his preference is to go to the Lakers, especially after he didn't make the all-nba team. Pritchard and him, however, spoke and, from all appearances, George said he'd have an open mind to staying on the Pacers if they made a vast improvement. Pritchard and him discuss how the Pacers could potentially get better. George isn't impressed, but keeps an open mind still thinking he's going to be a Laker (which Pritchard knows).

The rest is me putting two and two together based on the chain of events and media reports. On June 20, 2017, the David Griffin firing changed something. Its been rumored for some time that Lebron is gone one way or other after the 2017-2018 season. I think Griffin's firing made that a certainty. After that, Lebron then reached out to his agent and George that he's coming to LA, and wants George there with him. This is where George's preference to go to LA changes into a goal to go to LA no matter what.

After talking to Lebron, George then tells his agent (Mintz) about Lebron's plan and says now he wants to be a Laker no matter what along with Lebron. George's agent (as well as maybe Lebron's) then lets Pelinka know they are both coming to the Lakers in 2018 so long as the Lakers can guarantee two max slots. Pelinka says they can. In turn, George's agent lets the Pacers know he's gone no matter what so that Pritchard knows that he shouldn't be making moves (whether at the draft or free agency) with George in mind. Pelinka then signs off on the Russell/Lopez deal, keeping up his end of the bargain.

Cleveland gets wind of this all (whether through the agents or media reports), and begins to react. As a result, Cleveland is now desperately trying to obtain George thinking that if they can put George together with Lebron in Cleveland, instead of LA, both Lebron and George stay in Cleveland. This is their play not just to keep George, but to keep Lebron.

Then he's a fool. Bringing a chip to the Clippers would do much more for his legacy than with the Lakers.

Imagine being the one man who brought titles to the lowly Cavs and Clippers franchises. :wow:
