I wonder would Will Smith be considered "black" in Brazil - (admittedly random thought)

When I win I bring we with me
So I was looking at "Bright" promotional videos
(mostly just interviews ....it comes out on Netflix tomorrow)
Bright-3.jpg

I came across a "Bright" promo tour of Will in sao paulo brazil

....randomly it hit me like "I wonder do they even see him as a "black" guy.":patrice: ...while I couldn't say either way.:hubie: I've read enough documentation/history on Brazil to give me pause on the thought :jbhmm:

I know different countries have different ideas like for instance this guy from Ghana who went to Korea said part of the reason they liked him is cause people said he looked like will smith.

(Though I don't see it:comeon:).

Anyway, this isn't a proclamation or anything really ...I'm really just "thinking out loud" so to speak.:yeshrug:

Say what...?? :ld::dwillhuh:

I'm going to assume what you said was...
"Brazil does not get into the whole race shyt like the U.S. does
Of course it's discussed but not as crazy"
Hopefully thats a good translation:hubie: ...I was like what he just say :ohhh::heh:

But yeah, I'm aware Brazil has distinct "racial politics" as it were, which is why I mentioned it. That said I get that it might not be the first thing on someones mind. I'm just bring up the angle of wondering what the consensus would be if it was a topic of discussion.:yeshrug:

Why would Will Smith not be considered Black...he looks like an "unmixed" Black. He don't look like Blake Griffin or Kris Humphries...or Jesse Williams or Prince or Adam Clayton Powell or Rock Newman.

Blackness in Brazil is obviously not as rigid, but you are still marked as someone of African descent even if you have lighter skin. It's not like you can just erase it away.

But Race in Latin American seems to be based more on appearance than heritage.

shyt is weird...

Officially there are four racial categories in Brazil...

Black, Mixed, White and Asian and Native and Black and Mixed people are considered the Black population...

This article is a good overview of what is considered Black in Brazil. Its by Black Brazilian women bloggers...
Is Meghan Markle black? Depends. Do you live in the US or Brazil? (although the two are more similar than one may think): Daniela Gomes breaks it down
