So I'm over here thinking about this ice bucket challenge, and I think it's great that there is more awareness for this disease and more money coming into this charity. There's no doubt that some good has come out of it.

But on the other hand, it is also seems very corny to me in a lot of ways. First of all, this isn't making anyone give a damn about ALS who didn't already; it's just a trendy viral sensation that people want to feel like they are a part of while making themselves look caring, charitable, and "good" in the process. Second of all, many folks are replacing potential donations with a social media post. It's slacktivism at its finest. Third of all, it's also taking money out of the pockets of other charities which could potentially put the dollars to use more efficiently. And honestly, for most of the folks doing it, it just seems like a narcissistic excuse to show off their body or otherwise garner attention and good will to themselves in some self-serving fashion.

I think the general idea of spreading awareness and altruism is a good thing. I just also think there are downsides and that it doesn't create any long term sentiment or behavioral changes in people - just another excuse to be an attention whore. Sorry if this was already discussed, just thought I'd throw my two cents in on the matter
