Doctors argue that the procedure reduces the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases and genital infections.
Icelandic members of parliament have made moves to have circumcision banned.
The eight lawmakers, who represent five different political parties, joined together to proposed a bill to prohibit the procedure being performed on boys. Circumcision of girls has been banned in the country since 2005.
Members of the ruling Left Green Movement, the Progressive Party, People’s Party and the Pirate Party submitted the bill on Tuesday, RUV news site reported.
Circumcision is often associated with religious practices.
However, doctors argue that the procedure reduces the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases and genital infections.
The parliament members made recommendations to the bill that would hand down a six-year prison term for “removing sexual organs in whole or in part,” before adding that circumcision should only be considered for “health reasons.”
The bill names the circumcision of boys younger than 18 as a violation of human rights.

Iceland mulls banning boys’ circumcision, introducing 6-year jail term for offenders MPs in Iceland have proposed legislative amendments to outlaw circumcision for boys, a common practice in the Jewish and Muslim communities. If passed, anyone performing the procedure may be jailed for six years.
The draft clearly rejects the notion that the law should accommodate circumcision on religious grounds. “While it is certainly the right of the parents to give their children guidance when it comes to religion, such a right can never exceed the rights of the child,” the bill states.
“Circumcision involves permanent interventions into a child‘s body that can cause severe pain, also such an operation involves a risk of infections and other problems,” the proposed measure says further.
Children may decide on the procedure themselves, once they’ve reached the age of consent, “to understand what is involved in such action,” according to the bill. The age of consent in Iceland is 15.
