Intelligence responds to evolution pressure. Primates that were intelligent / self-aware enough to construct warm fabrics out of animal skins or plants were able to expand out of the tropics. Those primates that weren't were simply selected out.

Of course clothing is more than merely functional now. It's a signal for status and style.

Human beings are apex predators because of our wit, nothing more nothing else. We aren't the strongest, fastest, ... etc, but no other species on this planet can match our wit and wit DOES respond to evolution pressure. If you can't figure this out just by looking at how the world works right now then I don't know what to tell you. Power goes hand in hand with technological advancement.

Right now I'm reading a book on submarines (their history and use in warfare) and it just makes me go at humanity's technological capacity.

Clothes allow us to protect our skin from various thing and most importantly regulate our temperature. That is why we have cloths, not just for decency or fashion. Also, wearing clothes isn't universal, there are still tribes from remote locations, etc., that still walk around in the nude.
