assuming you are in school still, at least a full semester. 17 weeks or more
I for one, when looking at a resume, if i see you did something for a month, i don't really consider it experience.
A month could be how long it took for the boss to decide you were not cutout for the job.

I’m sorry to say this but youre a mark right now. Tech internships are supposed to be paid. Not saying anything crazy but atleast 14 an hour.
I'm cool with that:yeshrug:
Do anything to get in the door
Work for free for a few months and take the experience
I said internship but I should have said volunteer
I'll change the OP

At least six months.

Employers will look at anything less than that as sus and/or not enough time to really gain experience.

Can’t give you a time frame but do it to get experience.

I’d say at least a year unless you find a position that’s actually going to pay you.

That’s weird though, I’ve never heard of no shyt like this.. they really not gonna pay you lmao.

can you provide more details tho?

Man, you tripping. Any IT work you’re doing for free isn’t going to be taken seriously by anybody. That’s not how the profession works

Are you certified? You would do better coming up through the help desk grind. It sucks, but you do get paid for it.

Apply for paid positions whilst learning skills on this job and keep beefing up your CV.

The timescale depends entirely on how long you can afford to work for free

If you have zero experience, then go for it. It looks better than nothing and you’ll definitely learn something.

Traveling out of state is the only part that sounds bad here, is your company aware of it and gave the thumbs up or you just hit someone up about it and they agreed?

if your company is allowing you to do this, who knows, if you do really good they may want to offer you a position in the end, it’s a win-win for them if you volunteer, do really good and employ you because of it.

How far would you be driving?

6 months is a hell no for something unpaid. He only needs to learn the gist of networking in an enterprise setting, not all the specificities, that's what paid work is for.

This attitude will actually get you far in life, even though a lot of people will call you a sucker. As for your OG question, you do it for free until you’re ready to demand payment and people are willing to pay you. Essentially it just means you do it for free until you’re competent; that depends on your own ability to learn.
