Would he still be considered the GOAT? Or was that 2nd 3-peat necessary?

He was being called the goat by his peers before he had 3 titles

The mystique of going out on top at 30 would likely make up for his accomplishments being surpassed ala Jim Brown. His legend might actually be greater if he had never come back.

He would have been a legend still, but another 3 titles is ridiculous. :wow: Literally the guy took a year off, comes back, still makes the playoffs, and wins the chip the following year. Mr. Basketball at the highest level.

Yes, but the kobes and lebrons would have been viewed as having surpassed him by now without question.
By who? Kobe, maybe even tho its not even close who is better (ask phil jackson)
As for Lebron, nobody would put him on that level now. Media topics brought it up, but only a teenager would agree. Lebron is 2-1 in the finals and SHOULD be 1-2 if Leonard didn't miss that free throw, and if GOD did help his son Jesus shuttleworth make that desperation 3 to tie it after the missed freethrow :lawd:
And the teams Lebron had to beat to win the title? Lost to Jason Terry.. Then beats a team with weird dressing children who wear bookbags to press conferences and had no players outside of 4. I can't name there bench, the only "role" a role player had was James Harden coming off the bench and just "doing something"
Then this year he barely beats a San Antonio team that a few years ago T.Parker was like "Trade me, deez nikkaz too old"
Lebrons team of brokedown Wade and not really a thread bosh is the worst championship team of all time IMO. Lebron is considered great because he still won inspite of that. But his rode to glory is a painfully easier path than it was for past greats. Lakers vs Sacramento :whew: Wasn't even the finals, but wow. In comparison, Heat vs Pacers? :comeon: Pacers is the type of team to miss the playoffs next year. The Heat struggled vs old Boston and young Philly last year. I'm sorry, Lebron isn't in the convo...

he took two years off, not 1. Then he won 3 more. He didn't NOT win when he came back. Hakeem and Houston won back to back while he was gone.
I often wondered back then could the bulls of beaten Houston if Jordan played those years? I'm not convinced, but we'll never know :(
:comeon:
Magic is my favorite player of all time BUT you can't take anything that comes out of his mouth as proof of anything. His opinion will change in 5 minutes. He always flip flops, sometimes even in the middle of his dialogue.
What you are saying applies to TV personality Magic NOW. But not back then, the stereotypes you have for people didn't apply back then.

Well then I guess Magic Johnson and Isaiah Thomas are either lying, jordan fanboys or too young to know what you know :stopitslime:

After he retired in 1993, he was getting just about as much support as GOAT as he gets now

The difference is, people didn't try to reduce it to some simple, dumb ass "ring-counting" argument

Instead, people looked at the combination of MJ's individual talent, team success, and the circumstances he played under in Chicago to put him ahead of guys who had more rings

It was kind of refreshing. At least the discussion was a little more nuanced.

Nowadays, we just have

"6 >> 5"

"6 >>>> 2"

etc.

Magic is like the guy who always gets high and completely over-hypes whatever is on his mind at the moment.

THE DUNK CONTEST IS BACK! IT'S BACK!
