If Purdy was a top 10 pick on the same team with the same stats, what would the narrative around him be?

49ers..Braves..Celtics
You mean if Trey Lance was putting up these numbers on the Niners? Yeah, of course there would be people ready to crown him as the next coming, just looking at the stats... but there's more nuance to it than that. If you watch the games and pay attention you can see that CMC/Kittle/Deebo are all great YAC players that turn little 5 or 6 yard routes and screens into huge gains.

So that's part of the story. That's the part that the Purdy detractors want to talk about. It's true, but they leave out the other part of the story.

Purdy is making all the right reads when he needs to. He's processing the defenses the way elite QBs do. He also can extend plays with his legs in and around the pocket and he's been on the money with Brandon Aiyuk. They are becoming a deep threat QB to WR hook up because of Aiyuk's route running ability and because of Purdy anticipation throws.

Is Purdy a GREAT QB yet? No, I wouldn't say that. But he's good and he's better than what the detractors say.

There's also a lot of bad QBs in the league so he has to at least be middle of the pack if you're making a list.

It would be the same. That fact that he was the last pick on a team that had a superbowl level QB and a 1st round QB and ended up coming in and doing just as good if not better than them is the story. Nobody would expect the last pick in the draft to ever be in the MVP talk. 49ers offense is built like the Saints offense with Brees. Crossing routes for RAC yards and an all purpose running back.

This is football. Any QB on an undefeated team is going to get talked about like he’s a great.

It's the system that Purdy plays in that makes him look good.

This is the same system that made Kirk Cousins a starting QB, had RG3 looking like an MVP level QB, Got Matt Ryan an MVP, had Pornstar Jimmy a quarter away from winning a SuperBowl.

he would never be drafted in the 1st round because of his lack of tools so it doesn't matter
Mac Jones ain’t got no tools and he was a top
15 pick :heh:

I think the Brock Purdy story is so unprecedented that most people can’t fully comprehend it yet. If he were a 1st rounder, it’d be way easier to accept that he’s good. But since he’s a 7th rounder, it’s a tougher sell

It’s not really that unprecedented. The GOAT was a sixth round pick.

We’ve seen late round and undrafted QBs turn out to be good. But when’s the last time you’ve seen a late round rookie QB take over a perennial SB contender and produce like Purdy has? All while outperforming the #3 overall pick his own team traded three 1st rounders for only a year earlier

That’s why I said it’s unprecedented. I can’t think of any situations similar to this one
