I don't see the problem with it, not like he's main eventing Wrestlemania, he's getting a title shot at a throwaway May PPV that he'll likely lose anyways.
I can tell you what ive learned that always works to get heels over the company.

if Jinder Mahal comes out wearing a suit next week and cuts a promo using words like "You People, You Americans, etc" those redneck cac fans will eat it up and some how he will transform into an overnight heel "main eventer" in their simple minds.

Look at all the wrestlers who started wearing suits in WWE to elevate their heel status in the company....

Im almost 1,000 % sure the WWE discussed and brought the idea of being champ to Big E before the whole new day thing popped off.

More than likley they wouldve made him a transitional champ ala Ziggler, Ambrose & Swagger and basically leave him in midcard purgatory afterwards.

Truth be told wether you consider it c00n'ing or whatever dude made the "safe" choice going with the new day. He recieved tons of tv time , got marketing deals , helped put over Austin Creed , gave Kofi something to do & didnt dimish his value to the smarks who pay attention to W/L records & shyt.

His career arc long term STILL sets him up nicely for a late career run at the Ala Mark Henry.

Big E or Kofi really should get it, but WWE for some reason want them to keep twerking ass in the midcard and tag scene. New Day has been beyond all that for AWHILE now.

New Day probably isn't ready to move on. They make the most money from merchandise, they have their own cereal and their own ice cream, and still are the most over group in the company. Their greatest accomplishment is that they took a bad gimmick and turned it into one of the most marketable stables of our time.

That's one of the good things I see with the New Day gimmick. Without it I'm sure Xavier would have been released by now or strictly be on Main Event. Kofi would I'm not sure. Plus I'm sure they're getting a nice cut from merchandise sales.
