That land can be used to become prosperous off of. I might sell some of my timber and start a farm and rent out some of my acres to people and profit off of it. Might put a resort on it or build a subdivision. If we get enough together contiguous, we could form our own towns and take over county and state politics and governments.

Owning land is profitable. I don’t have to live there. Back in the day a lot of plantation and slave owners didn’t live on the land they owned, but rather in the large cities and towns. Think about New Orleans for example.
