Taken directly from the vid, Russia making moves due to any and/ or all of these reasons:
- Geographic Security
- The large economic implications of the gas and oil industry directly controlled/ affected by Ukraine
- Changing climate and shortage of water in Crimea (Russian grabbed this area from Ukraine during an internal revolt)
- Russia going through a slow, steady yet massive population decrease (COVID only made things worse)

The video misses the point. It’s not that there are resources in Ukraine. It’s that Putin ideologically believes that the resources and Ukraine belong to Russia (and the former USSR).
Putin doesn’t want oil or uranium. He’s got plenty (the real richest man in the world) and Russia has got plenty.
Putin wants glory. He wants to be the next Stalin. He sees himself as a Christian Crusader. He’s sociopathy wrapped in delusion in control of an army.
The nuance is important there and this is what separates it from Bush going into Iraq for oil.
Putin was raised during a time of extreme nationalism. Brain washed from a young age. Stalin was a hero. Excelled in spy school. Shot up through KGB ranks. And was ambitious (and cunning) enough to seek political office as Prime Minister and seize power as President. Replacing a President he saw as bending over to American influence and democracy.
Ultimately his goal is/was to rebuild a communist state and the USSR. NATO at the border is only a problem in that if he loses Ukraine to NATO it’s gone forever.
In 2014 it looked like Putin was heading towards taking Ukraine back through influence and the installation of his own puppet government. But since then Ukraine has been slipping further and further away and into western democracy. At some points it’s irrecoverable.
He can’t wait any longer. His deteriorating health has forced him to hit the fast forward button on all of his plans.

And yeah, from a pragmatic standpoint you're right, it makes total sense for Russia to do what they're doing.

I think you missed the point the video was making. It never implied Russia wanted their resources. It was moreso about getting the control of the territories that hold the resources.
This way neither Ukraine nor the West could ever use these newly discovered sources in the future as alternative means for energy supply, reducing Europe's or the rest of the worlds need to depend on Russia. If they did this, it would seriously threaten Russia's main economy of being one of the the world's leading energy providers
