Explain what a timing belt is, and why it needs to be replaced? :ohhh:

timing-belt.jpg

The timing belt is a notched rubber belt that allows the crankshaft to turn the camshaft. A timing belt is sometimes called a Gilmer belt or a camshaft drive belt. The camshaft opens and closes the valves in synchronized movement with the engine’s pistons.

If your timing belt breaks, your engine will stop working and typically will cause major engine damage. That’s why it’s important to have your timing belt regularly inspected. If the belt is loose or has slipped the valves could open at the wrong time and be struck by your engine’s pistons. Warning sounds include a slapping noise coming from your engine. This indicates a slipped belt.

During the inspection of your timing belt, Silvhorn Automotive technicians will look for cracks or stripping that indicate it’s time for belt replacement. Typically, timing belts should be replaced every 60,000 to 86,000 kilometers (or 50,000 to 60,000 thousand miles).

If you don't know what you're doing PLEASE take the car to a good independent automotive shop instead of trying this yourself...you can save money for sure especially with the way these newer cars are jam packed into the engine bay causing you to spend a couple hours taking the entire front clip/intake off yourself instead of a mechanic however they will know the correct procedures and tools to make sure that the car is at TDC or equivalent to ensure you don't destroy the engine trying to do it.

A better way is to simply confirm with the previous owner when the belt was last replaced (most likely on a higher mileage car) and ONLY believe them if they have receipts for the work! Dont buy a super high mileage car without doing your homework!

Lowest estimate I got for a timing built being fixed is 600 bucks, because mechanics keep telling me they like to replace everything at the same time:mjgrin:

I been driving my car all over for 2 years since they told me I needed one, your better off just buying a car that doesn't need a timing belt,or buying a second car for when the timing belt goes bad on the first one:mjlol:

I'm not paying a rack for something that has no guaranteed time frame on when it could go out, could be tommorow, could be years.

unfortunately for you,it was just bad timing:francis:

Hi

I was thinking about taking my car to the dealer for an oil change and then get a list of inspection items then take it to my normal shop for repairs.

I have had my car since 2012 but never replaced the timing belt

It has 120k miles on it...i bought it at 40k.

But I have not had many major issues :patrice:

chances are they will tell you that you need one, since i doubt the original owner got one within 40K.You will have to decide if you want to take that chance or not. I would probably check reviews online and see if you can find out how long other people with your car have gon before having major issues. Or just have enough saved up to replace it or buy a new car if something goes wrong, which is what we should all be aiming for.

I see got the money saved up so that' not the issue.

I just got 5 payments left and want to keep this for much longer.

I don' want a new car until I can get a dope SUV.

But Imma ride this thang until the wheels fall off.
