How true is this notion for 1st round players?

In the NFL is it a waste of time having a 1st round pick as a back up regardless of how well they play.

Or in the NBA should 1st round picks come off the bench as they develop or be in starting rotation regardless of skill.

In the NBA its beyond ridiculous. Especially when you consider that most of these guys in the 1st round are 19 -21.

Bit more of an argument for the NFL but still doesn't mean you need to start someone right away

Potential>>>> immediate results for the most part

Yeah guess the NBA is more inclined to develop guys. Bad example.

But it would be weird drafting a player in the lottery coming off the bench

Jabari and Wiggins over Embiid

Joe Smith over KG

Kerry Kitties over Kobe

I could go on and on. It's a ridiculous notion to suggest that a guy who may contribute more in year one or 2 is more valuable than a guy with a clearly much higher ceiling who needs to develop

Depends on the situation if you the 1st or 2nd pick yes you should start. If you were pick #9 and the team that picked you had a down year cuz of injuries and they have decent talent in front of you than its not a big deal if you come off the bench

Depends.

Kyrie was an automatic starter because he was #1 overalll...but the Cavs were trash anyway.

The Panthers last 2 1st rounders were McCaffery and Vernon Butler two non starters.....

This thought process works better with football though as more are ready for the workload

Off topic(posted in the observation nba thread), but I read a statement idea where an nba analyst said they should have lil tournament with the bottom eight seeds to determine the picks 1-8. That shyt was ingenious l. I wish swe over would do that winner of the tournament gets the 1 seed, runner up get the 2nd and so forth,

What you do with your 1st round pick is entirely dependent on where you are as a franchise...

Spurs could get away with drafting Dejounte Murray...who is the definition of a project...and it taking into his 3rd year before you can really get a feel for him being the type of player you need let alone if he is actually good at basketball or not...because before this year they were sleep walking their way to 50 wins and a top 3 seed...

Whereas a team like Detriot...can't draft a guy like that...cause time is running out for Stan...and he is pretty much his own fukking boss...he got to draft somebody who can help him right now...

Hell 1st round baseball picks take 3 maybe 4 years just to get to the majors...

Twins had the number 1 pick in baseball and people are like "yeah he might be ready to help them in 2021"...
