If you got your doctorate, would you feel disrespected if people didn't call you Doc?

So one of the assistant principals at my job just received her doctorate. I know it's gonna take some time getting used to calling Ms. ___ to Dr.____. But if you got your, would you disrespected if you people called you Mr./Ms..________. The reason I asked is because I know people who are quick to correct you if you don't call them Doc. Or if they're married Mrs. Do you think you would be like that? Or would you care?

I don’t care. Was in academia for quite some time and then went into a research role in industry. My peer group consists of phd students, post docs, professors, lecturers, research scientists and other visiting academics/researchers. Apart from the students, everyone else would have their PhDs so calling each other doctor is a bit redundant. Always weird when I’m elsewhere (mostly home where I grew up) and someone who knows me calls me Doc.

Having said that, I know a few people with doctorates that get angry if you refer to them otherwise. Insecure types.

I wouldn’t care. If their intention was to be disrespectful then it’s up there. I’m low key with my credentials as it stands now, so it’s whatever :yeshrug:

Yeah, I probably would.

If someone is my peer, I expect them to call me by my first name. If we're at a point where Mr is required, we're dealing with each other in a professional capacity so I'd expect them to get the title right.

They put the work in so I get it. As someone posted earlier, if it's a peer and in a professional setting then yes. However I won't expect people I deal with outside of work to say it nor would I care. It would come off pretty narcissistic correcting people. Butttt if I don't like a person or I'm in a argument that's different :umad:

I care in professional settings, especially places where other Black kids and families are- they need to see someone who looks like them being called Dr. I have had kids day I am the first Dr. That was Black they know, sayin they thought doctors were old White men.

At the university where I work, everyone has a Doctorate or MD, so it’s just first name.

I personally wouldn’t care and there are a few people I work with who have their doctorate and outside of official meetings, no one addresses them as doctor.

I dated a woman who was in her residency. She was annoyed that the nurses didn't call her Dr, and she had every right to be upset :manny:

The only people that get called "Doctor" or addressed as "Dr." are physicians and professors in academic settings.

Outside of that, it's tacky to call someone with a PhD a doctor. And it's tacky for a person with a PhD to require someone outside of an academic setting to call you Dr.

Don't involve me in your tackiness. :hubie:
