I had this thought the other day. A lot of times GOAT game discussions are based around the most enjoyable games a person has ever played. That's fair enough, but what if we were to think of GOAT game in terms of a "lost on a deserted island" scenario? From there you'd probably want a good bit of diversity. Personally it helped me clarify some of my favorites a lot better.
I'd have to go with:
Best Action Adventure Game (linear): The Last of Us (runner-up is Red Dead Redemption, was only interested in the story and gameplay are pretty linear for a Rockstar games)
Best 3-D platformer: Super Mario Galaxy 1 or 2 (coin-flip for me, Super Mario 64 would be the runner-up)
Best Action Adventure Game (open-world): Fallout 3 (runner up would be Metal Gear Solid V, very satisfying to tackle missions in different ways and R&D new weapons to try out which I was still doing over 250 hours in)
Best RPG: Suikoden II (runner up would be Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver)
Kind of an interesting exercise because it had me thinking of (on the surface) vastly different games in similar contexts, and made me get a better understanding of what genres of games I most appreciate.
Sohh what would y'all picks and genres look like?
