"Hey can you stop saying rude and insensitive things to me."

Person says "I'm trying not say them, what do you want me to do?"

It's pretty much safe to say they don't respect you that much...

If a person can't control or does not think about what they say to a person, they don't respect them.

If they truely respected that person they wouldn't feel loosey goosey with the insults.

They feel you aren't going to do anything or they think less of you.

I wouldn't say all that. Some people just value their own importance more than others. I don't think it's a respect thing but more of a selfish thing. Learning how to say what's on your mind without being offensive comes with practice and maturity, imo. That person just sounds immature.

i have a very mixed response on this

some people really have zero emotional intelligence. that issue usually can be fixed with maturity and having people talk to them.
then you have those who narcissistic and really only care about what they think and feel.

personally i feel that if i come to you as a friend and tell you that your criticisms are hurtful, mean spirited, and not helpful and you continue to act the same, you don't respect me or the friendship or you have some sort of underlying mental health issue that i am not qualified to deal with.

i have a friend who falls into the discription in the OP and needless to say we are not as close as we were because i got tired of it.
