The gaming experience wouldn't
. Multiplayer existed before the Internet, but it was fascilitated by arcades. You also had the advantage of multiplayer without having cheaters . Assuming technology advanced the same, but the internet never existed I think only MMO players would suffer. There would be a Renaissance everywhere else.

I personally miss the arcade days.
I know it's a hottake, but I think hardware would be much much better if we developed under the arcade model which forced you to come to a centralized facility for multiplayer.

we had much better hardware because game hardware makers tailored their offerings to a commercial Arcade's budget, and not the home consumer's cheap ass budget. That's why we had much bigger and functional versions of wii games like boxing, shooting, and dancing before the 2000s. Now imagine if we improved on them. Hell, do you remember the car sims or flight sims that gave you a real cockpit at arcades? Now imagine giving updated graphics from ForzaMotorsport or fs2020 to those rigs along with commercial grade 5090 chips. You could have a legit dogfight with your friends from a 360degree VR/ar screens that tumbled and flipped as you did aerial maneuvers.

Hell, I think this is why we don't have full dive VR in 2025. The hardware cost would blow out the home consumer, but would be feasible for a corporate owner viewing it as an asset . The internet incentivized the gaming industry to Tailor itself to the home consumer at the cost of functionality

I mean I get the connecting online thing but people gamed at a high level prior.
Not just about multiplayer, but additional content, finding games that might be hard to find that are otherwise available. Smaller indy game studios who wouldn't have to go through the cost of generating cds and fighting to get shelf space at game stores, but can just make their stuff available online. Steam's whole model is built on the internet.
