It was a huge dip in quality compared to the first one. The reviews of that album in real time reflect that as I'm sure you're aware of. LAD was a step up in quality even though there were more commercial tracks than RTD. Death never elevated Pun's second album into being called a classic & ATG album. Doesn't matter what it sold either

like to me imo pun's second album if he was alive critics would have panned it so regardless of pun passing away it did not matter
pun second album was trash biggie second album imo was better then pun second album

The reviews in real time obviously don't reflect that if The Source gave it the same Mics as "Capital Punishment"....so I'm not sure what you're talking about.

I've never personally met anyone that thinks "LAD" was a step up from "RTD". Like I said, my peer group (I was 20 in 1996) thought it was a cool, uneven project and we were pretty much :yeshrug: about the hype it received as a result of BIG dying. It was expected. I never expected that to carry on for 20+ years though. At some point I figured people would judge the album objectively.

And I never said anything about the word "classic" specifically. I said death is the ultimate pass. It's disingenuous to pretend it's not. Death is the reason people were talking about Big L could've been where Jay-Z currently is if he hadn't died. Death is the reason Mac Dre was on the verge of being a global mega star had he not died. Death tends to elevate artists, especially when it happens in their prime. BIG is just that concept taken to the extreme.

Biggie is the Penny Hardaway/Grant Hill of rap.

Tupac was special and he deserves the icon status but, Biggie was just a rapper.

Also, Pac gave us tens of albums whereas Biggie gave us two and some change.

He's overrated. I'd choose Ross's discography over Big's.
Neg not necessarily off just this post but a series of post that is all.

50 cent is a generic ABC gangsta rapper. He's not clever at all, can't rap and has a WOAT album discography.

:russ:
Ross doesn’t have a classic album jokes on u like I said 50 mixtape discog>>>>> Ross whole solo discography. if we add in all of 50s shyt from 98-09, Ross isn’t even ten percent of that. Regardless tho this is a big vs Ross thread and biggie washes him on all levels. So does big pun which has one classic album and a shytty one. So does big l... no need to explain it there’s levels to this shyt.

trilllllaaaaaaaaaa..ross.

I don't know, I can listen to big for like 10-20mins and be done. But Ross got to many bangers for in the car.

Who loved food more, Ross or BIG.

After I heard ross rap over your nobody until somebody kills you and not even rap close to biggies version despite having an almost 20 year head start, there was nothing else to discuss

I should’ve been more specific with what I said because the Source & some other media outlets was on some bs with their reviews. There’s no one back then in real time or even now that would even remotely compare Yeaah Baby to Capital Punishment. It’s the epitome of mediocre. I remember buying it back in 2000 & listening to it shaking my head & pretty much a good portion of people said the same. Most people were pretty disappointed like me. We’re in the same age group BTW so I’m going by what I saw & my peers & family/friends in the south as well. The highs of LAD are some of the best rap music I’ve heard even though I think RTD as a whole (and I go back & forth on this every few years) is a slightly better album. The level to where Big was rapping on on LAD was the best I’ve heard & I’m sure there’s many that would agree. Did death affect LAD? Of course & only a fool would say it didn’t but that album was gonna blow regardless & get all kinds of accolades; especially if he had a chance to promote it & make videos to the singles. I don’t know about that Mac Dre analogy but Big was seen as “that guy” in rap well before his death. So when people (not necessarily saying you) attribute the success of his career to his death or his beef with Pac I don’t think they’re telling the whole story. And the reason LAD’s legacy is still going strong 20+ years later is because the album is that good regardless of some think there’s “filler” or it’s “commercial”
