If you were a producer, how would you turn a rapper with potential into a superstar?

Would need some crazy marketing shceme...kinda like what Lil B and the Based God meme thing.

Good music alone just won't cut it.

There have only been a handful of superstars in the history of hip hop... and the majority of them came from under Dre's tutelage.

Dre is a perfectionist, and that's part of why Snoop Em and 50 took off in the fashion they did.

on top of that, the music was undeniable... Superstars just can't make good or great music, it has to reach a point where there is no stopping it, no matter what you do.

Just cause you're a super producer doesn't mean you have the ability to create superstars... look at Cassidy.

well one, id make sure i was supporting a rapper i believed in that can actually rap

and then you gotta take it to the internet.. you gotta come up with a creative, innovative, original way to stand out and get recognized and if your rapper can rap, the blogs will pick it up, the forums, will pick it up, drop a hot tape and you pave yourself a nice road

You learn the strengths and weaknesses of the artist, coach them on their weaknesses and highlight their strengths. The weaknesses that they can't perfect on their own you cover up with the right guest appearances and the right instrumentation. Help them create a cohesive project, and then have them make all the rounds (radio, tv, internet etc.) Have them seen in public with the right people to vouch for whatever image it is you're trying to portray for them, plant some stories in the tabloids (charitable acts that are really planned but make them seem as though they tried to do it anonymous), and then hope the world is looking for what this artist has to offer. I've never turned an artist into a superstar so I wouldn't know what it takes but that would be, at least in part, my strategy. I'd also imagine that it takes a lot of luck and timing.

make him go the flo rida route.

make them techno, edm, party ass themes, and try to get a catchy ass hook. :manny:

thats where the money at though.

Was just telling my homie who raps this.

I told him fukk trying to make urban radio or get a hood fanbase..pretty much every aspiring rapper you meet caters to those two. I told him pull a Pitbull/Flo-Rida/Black Eyed Peas for the white hoes and eat :ohlawd:

It's a difference if you really love the culture and you want to make great rap music..but if you're in it for the cash you might as well really cash out.

Don't get the roles of Producer, Manager & Publicist mixed up.

I don't think a producer can single handedly turn a rapper into a superstar.

What I do think though is that a producer can take it upon themselves to hone their own skills as a song writer and actually help a rapper create sound, structured material instead of just lobbing them beats and hoping they strike gold.

A manager, publicist and a talented producer (who knows how to write songs) have a shot at successfully turning a rapper into a superstar IMHO.
