I think it depends on the individual most of the time tbh

i grew up poorish compared to some of the class mates that were going on family holidays twice a year

but in my teens i realized where my parents failed and why they couldnt do much for me after the age of 13, i said to myself and still do that i will never ever end up like them , still learning tho as each day goes by.

When you're struggling to "get by" (whether it be financially or emotionnaly, for whatever reason) from ages 18-25 you think you have all the time in the world, but during that time people who have more stability (financially, but not only) are on scholarships, pursuing advances studies, taking time to network, travelling, etc...and you realize later on that you cannot catch up on that missed time. Indeed, it takes double or even more the effort just to be near the same level.

This in part is why black people and a lot of minorities in general play themselves when it comes to this country. Everybody still acts like the "American Dream" is some ultimate redeeming quality. Social mobility is a half truth. The idea that you can always move up just by working hard sounds nice, but the fact of the matter is a lot of the time it's just not true. People quote examples without looking at numbers, this thread is a great example. For every one of you who says you got it out the mud there's probably like 2 people who failed. It can't be that everybody who loses is at fault cause they didn't work hard enough. That line of thought is just simple binaries.

I'm from a family of 6...mom, dad and 4 kids...all from Haiti.... 3 of the 4 kids are married with children.... combined household income for the ones that are married is $110,000+....my brother is still single because he doesn't believe in marriage, he pulls in $70k a year on his own.


One thing I've seen being in America since the age of 2....poor people from outside this country aren't afraid of hard work. Most poor people born in America wouldn't work hard for any reason

And the reason those stories are so profound, and loved is because they rarely ever happen. This system is set up for the majority of people to be on the bottom, so the people on top can maintain their status.
