If you were rich, which is a bigger flex.. buying a $500,000 car or watch… or giving 100 people $50,000.

That’s because you assumed both were intended to be equal amounts.

It what world is a 500k watch or vehicle a bigger flex than a 5M tax deductible charitable donation?

There a tax bracket difference between the two (based on affordability) and the first can be financed. The latter rarely is and in some cases can get your name put on a building, while the former almost never will.

1. I never said it was a charitable donation. That would imply you could use part of it as a tax write off.

2. Buying a what, depending on the type of watch becomes an asset. Giving away money to strangers is perceived by some people as a negative.

It’s more of a personal question in terms of what makes you feel better. Maybe the word “flex” is throwing you off.. both scenarios can be done without telling anyone so it would be “silent” flex.

1. So is it a gift or a payment? If its a gift then there's a strong possibility of using it as tax write off, so why not try to? If its a payment it could be anything, but the liquidity required to make the 5M in payments is higher in most situations, and that in itself is a flex.

2. Even if its an investment instrument the amount of time it will take to 10x its initial purchase value (to be equivalent of 5M) likely a 10+ year horizon in the best situations. Even then the 5M in payments/gifts to others with inflation on that timeline would still exceed the 500k investment horizon.

Not to pass judgment but there are few situations id understand where the capability to give ones self something for 500k makes them feel better than the capability to give other 5M.

You can't do math and don't know what flex means either

none of the options would feel like a flex to me.

flexing to me would be running negative campaigns against tesla, while taking a massive short position, damaging the company while simultaneously having my political think tank working on getting musk and his fellow boers deported back to south africa.
