Shyt is sobering as hell...
If you're on the east coast or central time, its playing now on PBS. However, it looks like they already got the full video up on the PBS website

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/separate-and-unequal/

They're bringing back segregation in Baton Rouge. A rose of any other name...smh. Its definitely class based but race is without a doubt a factor. The realistic truth is that income inequality is real and as a result of this movement it will only further that divide in the long term.

Right now they have an out of state c00n preacher who traveled to the city to support the movement

I see something completely different about catching at risk students in middle school due to some research showing that that is when the spiral actually starts. :patrice:

Yeah looks like they're doing two stories tonight. They're showing that one now here. The first part is on their website though.

I just finished reading a book called "How children Succeed" and it says some of the same stuff. There is a lot of research out there stating similar conclusions and information.

Damn shame that all this research hasn't been effectively put into action in a lot more inner city schools.

Seems like both sides in Baton Rouge should meet each other halfway. Stop the busing and let kids go to neighborhood schools or magnets if they choose. That way the tax money stays in the school district.

I can't watch the video are work but I would say in watching the documentary, its a sticky situation. I'm sure a few people on this board can attest to attending some dysfuctional schools. My elementary school was extremely dysfunctional and in an "urban" area. On one hand, if that appears to be the case with a particular school, can you blame a parent for making a selfish decision in doing anything possible to do what they want for thier child. I wouldn't want my child attending the elementary school I attended for example..

On the other hand, you're creating class based segregation (which in most cases also tends to follow racial lines) based on the failure of the system as a whole as someone said in the nola.com comment section. Not only are you indiscriminately barring students from attending a certain school, regardless of behavioral issues, but you're also saying in essence that we're going to arbituarily decide that we no longer want to be part of the city to stop the "syphoning" of money from more wealthy residents. This is despite the fact that the progressive tax rate is pretty much standard in our country depending on your income level and how we do things everywhere else and with the understanding you're provide a public good in order to minimize areas of destituion which then leads to more serious social problems like crime. You're complaining about the social ills created by a certain segment of society, the best way to make sure they continue and get worse is to isolate them from society further.

I agree with you 100%. They used to put kids with behavior problems, who wouldn't do their work in special ed (black boys in particular). People complained so those students and milder cases are in class bothering everyone and lowering the learning level.

Some school districts seem to be going the way the public colleges did in the 80s and 90s. Voters no longer wanted good, inexpensive education for everyone and slashed funding to higher education. It's like they lie awake at night thinking of ways to stop "them" from getting an education.

Bad idea to post this in the coli. Most posters believe desegregation is the worst thing to happen to blacks since slavery.

its not a bad idea & I don't think most believe that. We notice that something occurred during desegregation that has hindered our progress somewhat. Segregation is not the answer & isn't a good thing IMO. MLK didn't die for naught.

It just recently dawned on me that black people are not on the same page for segregation/desegregation at all.

We complain that whites don't want to go to school with us, but we complain about gentrification which would result in whites going to school with us. We demand that elite universities raise the percentage of black students and keep affirmative action, but we want to save HBCUs.
