.....Been doing this for about 3 years now at the low-end. I have my A+ only and currently studying for my MCSA but between these shady recruiters, high number of contractors vs full time employees and top certifications earning less and less (MCSE used to be median starting salary used to be like 90k back in 2006....and now its down to about 50-60k), I'm starting to see to the writing on the wall. Recruiters calling me and trolling seeing my damn experience but when calling me on the phone, they look over my resume (further...) and say I don't have experience to do the job. Why the fukk you calling me for then fakkit :why:? I'm about to go into the medical/biology field brehs. I don't want to worry about job security when i'm still in school and I'm still only halfway through anyway. All my core courses are complete so I just may make the switch.

Once you get out of the low end IT jobs it's all gravy after that. But the problem is getting high end positions is damn near impossible without connections. It took me 5 years of working low end sweatshop IT jobs to finally get a junior role. And the only reason I got that is job hopping like crazy.

I learned my lesson with recruiters early on so I don't give them the time of day. All the good jobs are through word of mouth.

I've almost quit the IT field more times than I can count. But it's such easy money it almost feels like stealing once you get high enough in the ranks or at the right company.

Your problem might be location if your in a saturated market. I had to relocate to another city with a hotter job market to see any dividends.

I definitely hear you on this. The market is becoming over saturated in my area also. I specialize in IT security , which is a growing field but i am not in the right area for it. Ive been doing low level IT work for almost 2 years now. There are times i felt like walking away from this field but i feel obligated to work it because of my degree in Cyber security.
Id like to go back to school for something in the medical field but feel id just be accumulating more debt.

Cybersecurity engineer.

1. Get your linked in on point.
2. Get your Security +

Find a SOC Analyst Position Tier 1 if you can hand you have the skillset, get Tier 2

They are around, you have to look in the right spots and know how to search them

Do you work live near any military bases or huge Federal installations? If so knock out some of the certs on the chart below to at least a Level II then look into Federal contracting jobs. I was stuck bouncing from one low end IT job to the next in the private sector until I got into Federal contracting. And after only 3 years was back in the private sector making 30% more money. The Feds give away senior and mid-level job titles like their candy.

Are you sure this is the field you want to be in?

You have one cert (A+) having been in the game for three years.... That's not the work ethic of someone who gets shots at good jobs outside of the help desk. Maybe I'm being unfair though. Did you go out of the way to learn about scripting/languages? Attend conferences? Get assigned some higher level duties at work/ get promoted? Have any projects you can show off? This field will throw money at you like @JT-Money said, but you need to pay them dues and more.

You can't blame recruiters for how they roll, they always shoot for the best candidates..... If you really want to proceed, i suggest you start looking up the jobs you want on Dice, Monster, LinkedIn and then copy their whole style. Get the certs they're looking for, learn the languages they're looking for. Rewrite your resume and cover letters as necessary....Then you'll get an interview for the jobs you want....

You're right. Ordering more books right now to study up on. Thanks for the honest advice you guys gave here tonight. I just needed some reassurance because i had been losing hope in the field.

Good luck breh :salute:

Look at it on the bright side. You already paid your dues on the lowest level of this field. You just need to kick your career to the next level with the certs and. Id also recommend attending local conferences and looking for education and networking opportunities on MeetUp when you can.

Why'd you leave the science / medical field?
