By Dan Ambrose:

Welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. says he’ll be ready to whip Saul Canelo Alvarez’s backside after he faces WBC 147 pound champion Shawn Porter in a unification fight this year. The unbeaten Spence Jr. (25-0, 21 KOs) says he’s going to call Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya’sbluff by agreeing to a fight against two division world champion Canelo Alvarez (52-1-2, 35 KOs.

For Canelo and DAZN, a fight against IBF welterweight champion Spence can’t come soon enough, because the Mexican star has a shortage of appealing opponents. Although there’s been talk of a fight between Canelo and WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev, that fight reportedly won’t be happening next. Kovalev will be defending against his mandatory Anthony Yarde in his next fight.

Canelo likely to fight GGG in September

Canelo will likely be facing Golovkin in a trilogy fight in September, and then after that the Golden Boy star will be free to face Spence in December or next May.

“I’ll beat Canelo’s ass. After I fight Shawn [Porter], I’m going to try and fight Canelo. I’m going to call Oscar’s bluff,” said Spence on his social media site.

A lot of boxing fans would be excited at seeing Spence moving up to middleweight to challenge Canelo for his IBF and WBA titles. Spence can’t fight for Canelo’s WBC belt, because he’s been given the Franchise tag by the World Boxing Council. The titles are less important compared to Canelo’s stature in the boxing world. Canelo is easily the most popular fighter in Northern America.

Spence has recent victories over Mikey Garcia, Carlos Ocampo, Lamont Peterson and Kell Brook. Errol didn’t look that great in boxing his way to a dull 12 round unanimous decision win over lightweight Mikey last March on Fox Sports pay-per-view in Arlington, Texas. Boxing fans expected a lot more from the much bigger and stronger Spence than what they saw from him against Garcia. Spence fought a safety first style of fight in beating the short 5’6″ Mikey.

Canelo too big for Spence?

Spence, 5’9 1/2″, will have the height and reach advantage over the 5’8″ Canelo, but he’ll be giving away a lot of weight, speed and punching power. The weight might might not be that much different between the two. Spence blows up to the 180s in between fights, and he looks huge. He might even be bigger than Canelo. Spence is arguably more courageous than the guys that Canelo has been fighting lately, and he could wear him down with pressure. Canelo’s stamina is his weakness, but his opponents haven’t pressed him hard enough to take advantage of it. Golovkin and Daniel Jacobs both allowed Canelo to outwork them in the first half of their recent fights against him. Spence isn’t going to make the same mistake by giving away the first six rounds like GGG and Jacobs did.

:francis: spence dont do it fam, at least not until you clean up the 147lb division. Build your name and your legacy, Oscar will put all kind of stipulations in order for you to fight canelo, like they did my boy kirkland.

He should do it. Finally get to see him in a fight he ain't weight bullying
He need to seriously be considering moving up. Haymon not going force Thurman or Manny to fight him so whats the point of staying at welterweight.
I'd love to see Spence fight Julian Williams for instance

He's the worst possible matchup for Canelo. He'd stop Canelo. People don't realize this but Canelo is declining physically. His legs are slowing down and weakening. It actually became apparent the second Golovkin fight when he ran out of stamina. Canelo is young but he's been a pro for a very long time. His time is coming to an end soon. If I'm Oscar i stay away from Spence at all cost.

your stars are but dust on my shoes
I think Spence's jab is underrated and against Canelo his footwork is going to be the difference that frustrates Canelo.

It's a tall order for his first fight at 160, but Spence has the IQ and durability to win a decision.

I mostly agree with the assessment, I think the knee is worse than we know, and I didn't like how hard Canelo had to labor to move around the ring against Jacobs.

But wtf is you going on about that second fight with G? That Canelo had way more stamina than we had seen from him before. He didn't really gas till the 9th or 10th in a fight where he was pushing G back. First fight he was tired within 4.

He was slipping and losing balance toward the end of the fight, as well as whiffing punches. He gassed earlier the first fight because he gained so much mass. When he cut the mass he got some juice back in the tank. It probably is his knee, as he's been wearing that knee tape for years, but I just think he's legs in general look worn. His calves don't have the time they used to. On top of that you don't see him using the same footwork he used to. Go watch his footwork in the Khan fight and then watch his footwork in the Jacobs fight or even the fight before that. Dude is very close to reaching that point where everything starts fallign apart. All of this moving up and down in weight can't be good. Facing Errol Spence would accelerate that process exponentially. Canelo wouldn't ever be the same, I promise you. I'm tempted to say Errol walks through Canelo...that's how bad of a matchup it is.
