Yes, this mechanic was used to perfection with the codecs in Doom. The entire lore was there for you to read but you weren't required to because, in game, Doomguy literally did not give a flying fukk about any of the story or exposition and was only concerned with killing as many demons as possible.I appreciate it when it's done to keep the pace of the game moving but when its used as an obvious lazy mechanic as an alternative to crafting well thought out cut scenes its frustrating and cheapens the experience of the game overall.
