This is what happens when you make housing a priority. The soviet union sucked in other ways but the one thing people who grew up under it knew was that housing and employment were priorities and were guaranteed.

In our society money is the priority and it shows in the city design. From the high parking rates and pervasive parking lots that could be underground but aren't, to the outrageous prices for even a 1 bedroom apartment. The design is focused on catering to cars which are either owned by the wealthy or leased by the poor. Shameful.

These may be tough decisions for you, but people who have been without would much rather have a bad apartment than no apartment at all.
