In hindsight Hov's Beach Chair was an awkward ass song

That last verse is incredible to me.

Life is but a dream
Can't mimic my life
I'm the thinnest cut slice
Intercut, the winner's cup
With winters rough enough to interrupt life
That's why I'm both saint and sinner, nice
This is Jay everyday, no compromise
No compass comes with this life just eyes
So to map it out you must look inside
Sure books can guide you but your heart defines you, chica
Your corazón is what brought us home
In great shape like Heidi Klum, Maricón, I am on
Permanent vacay, life is but a beach chair
This song is like a Hallmark card until you reach here
So 'til she's here, and she's declared
The heir, I will prepare
A blueprint for you to print
A map for you to get back
A guide for your eyes, and so you won't lose scent
I'll make a stink for you to think
I ink these verses full of prose
So you won't get conned out of two cent
My last will and testament I leave my heir
My share of Roc-A-Fella Records and a shiny new beach chair

I mean fukk what you think about this nikka but that's just really good writing, period, a great verse.

The song itself is whatever though, never liked that beat much.

"Life is but a dream to me
Gun shots sing to these other guys
But lullabies don't mean a thing to me

I'm not afraid of dying, I'm afraid of not trying
Every day hit every wave like I'm Hawaiian
I don't surf the net, no,
I never been on MySpace
Too busy letting my voice vibrate

Carving out my space in this world of fly girls
Cut-throats and diamond-cut ropes I twirls."

"In the projects, especially back in the 80s, things were so violent that you literally went to sleep to the sound of gunshots some nights. You grow up fast like that. The second meaning here is that Karma catches up to other guys – in the form of gunshots putting them to sleep – but not me, at least not so far. And I’m not going to let fear of death slow me down." - Jay Z

"Jay Z continues with the dream motif in this line, saying that gun shots like lullabies are singing “other guys” to sleep (Death?????), but he’s made sure to move past that place in his life where gun shots still fill the air."- Genius

“I’m not afraid of dying, I’m afraid not trying — everyday hit every wave like I’m Hawaiian.”

"Yet again Jay smacks us with a double entendre, using wave and WAV (a PC audio filename extension), interchangeably. While Jay doesn’t surf, he would be familiar with the WAV file format given that it lets artists record crystal clear audio without file compression. The master recording of Beach Chair, and most of his other tracks at the time, are likely in WAV format.

Hawaiians are often considered fearless, born surfers. Surfing is in their blood. Jay considers himself a fearless, born lyricist. Hip Hop is in his blood. A outstanding use of metaphor. But he doesn’t stop there. Although Hawaiians are born surfers, they’re always out in the water working on their craft. So too, Jay is always in the studio working on his craft, determined to stay on top.

Now that’s a killer line!" - Genius

Also, you should check out the Genius for the verse you quoted.

Maybe I was too young at the time but this shyt was dope when it dropped. I must go and listen again. All of my real world opinions on music seem to be uncommon on the internet :francis:

The prelude, 3rd verse of trouble, and lost ones are the only thing i remembwr fondly of kingdom come
Maybe show me what you got simply because just blaze blessed the boy hova

The concept of kingdom come deeiving from the superman comic where superman leaves and returns to save the world was dope but hov didnt excute it right. I do give him credit for trying different sounds but it felt like when iordan came back from the first retirement. He was lakcluster but still dope in flashes but ye had passed him by miles by then musically. Then he dropped american gangster and got back to what made him stellar

i'm alright with this song but he a lot of the time he picks popular surface level artists when it comes to other genres.
