In mob shows why do they always drop the gun after a hit ?

For example in Sopranos whenever someone gets whacked they always drop the gun on the scene of the crime. Even in Godfather when Micheal Corleone kills the cop in the restaurant he drops the pistol.

Wouldn't it make it easy for the cops to trace ? Or do they drop it to "send a message" to the enemy ?

Because they don't want to take the chance and be caught with the gun on them while fleeing the scene or at a later date.

1. The hitters are always wearing gloves so there is no finger prints.

2. The serial #'s are usually scratched off so the gun cannot be traced back to anyone (cold case)

3. So they cant be caught with the weapon.

4. If the murder weapon is already at the scene of the crime, the authorities have even LESS to work with in finding the killer. It essentially makes the case harder to solve because they already have the murder weapon that cant be identified or traced to anyone.

@newarkhiphop Im leaning towards your theory but check out that scene. No gloves and they fled in a car so it's not like they would get caught on foot. You don't think it's to send a message ? Maybe even a message to the police so they know it's mob related and they can investigate accordingly

I don't quite get your 4th point. Why would would the case Be HARDER to solve if the weapon is on the scene as opposed to if it's not ?

i would think you're supposed to wear gloves if you're gonna drop the gun at the scene.

Also in this day and age of testing for gun powder residue you better get rid of the jacket soon too

It's basically an extension of point #3. Cops can't conduct a search and perhaps find the gun on someone. Nab him, and bring him in for questioning

They just trying to make dumb nikkas do the same..and easily get caught..the mafia in films is just continuing with the old school tradition when fingerprinting wasn't as advanced.

in the context of this scene, those two dudes who dipped weren't even from the country, so even if they have prints, they're not on file since they not citizens
