In New Tweet, Donald Trump Falsely Blames Obama For Violent Gitmo Detainees Released Under Bush

In a Tuesday morning tweet, President Donald Trump falsely blamed his predecessor Barack Obama for over a hundred Guantanamo Bay detainees who returned to terrorism following their release.

Trump tweeted the following:

Trump’s figure is actually right on the nose: a 2016 Office of the Director of National Intelligence report found that 122 former Gitmo detainees have returned to the battlefield. But his attribution of their release to Obama is false; the vast majority of those detainees were released under President George W. Bush, a fellow Republican. Only nine of the 122 were released by Obama.

Unsurprisingly, Trump’s tweet came thirty minutes after a Fox & Friends segment cited the exact same stat (Fox News did not incorrectly blame Obama, however).

Let's parse his tweet.

122 vicious prisoners,

According to the "Summary of the Reengagement of Detainees Formerly Held at Guantanamo Bay" released by the Director of National Intelligence in September 2016, there were a total of 122 prisoners who re-engaged in terrorist activities after being released from Guantanamo Bay (out of 693 released prisoners).

released by the Obama Administration from Gitmo, have returned to the battlefield.

Of the 122 prisoners who re-engaged in terrorism, 113 of those prisoners were released before January 2009 (i.e. before the Obama administration) 9 were released after January 2009 (i.e. after Obama was inaugurated).

Just another terrible decision!

Based on the info above, Trump is blaming Obama for something that's mostly not his fault; he has a better record on this accord than his predecessor President Bush.

the only thing i'd blame bush for is them being in GITMO in the first place, but releasing them even if they went on to do bad shyt later was the right move. catch them in the act and kill them then. this would be like a criminal being falsely convicted of another crime and then evidence is discovered later that gets them released and while out they go back to their life of crime. you don't then blame the authorities who released him for his actions.

and 571 released detainees didn't engage in known terrorism. those 122 that did are a small price to pay for that overwhelming majority.
