The black man is always targeted.
To prepare for his role, Terrence Howard interviewed 123 pimps and 78 prostitutes over two-and-a-half years. He lived with four different pimps, including a month-long stint in a Memphis brothel.
The man dedicated two and a half years to this role. ALMOST THREE YEARS STUDYING PIMPING AND HOEING.
And not just any kind of pimp - a Memphis pimp with a strong ass accent and unique manerisms.
Not only did he have to embody a pimp, one that had to deal with the stressful realities of the lifestyle he was in. He also had to embody one that was acutely aware of his position in society and wanted to peruse greater things as an entertainer.
And not only did he do that, be basically pulled off a damn near flawless performance. You would’ve thought Terrence actually grew up in backwoods Tennessee, became a pimp, and then ended up as an actor.
AND NOT ONLY DID HE DO ALL THAT SHYT
BUT
HE RECORDED THREE FULL LENGTH CHARTING ACADEMY AWARD WINNING SONGS AS THIS CHARACTER
