some of you cats have some foggy memories of hip hop and when the culture changed and never went back to that PG-PG13 era
kid n play's UNSUNG episode details it best: for those of you too lazy to watch;
they talk about how in the early 90's if you weren't street/thug/calling women bytches, you weren't popping, you were old and corny (TIME STAMPED):
now...yall gonna disagree with muthafukkas that were right there in the middle of all the shyt?![]()

early 90s.. cats were more lyrical, if anything.. Kid N Play, were never lyrical/had bars..
they were a dance group/niche act.. of course their run was numbered, from the jump.. not to mention, hip-hop was more lyrical in the early 90s.. not gangsta rap..
why are you posting all these niche acts, first & foremost..
1995.. lets see.. OB4CL, Liquid Swordz, Soul Food, Do You Want More..?, Poverty's Paradsise, Coast II Coast, Labcabincalifornia, Sittin On Chrome, The Show OST... ODBs album.. Goodfellaz..
hip hop was still, very lyrical.. matter of fact, there was actually more of a balance at that time, than i can remember..
if you were around back then.. im sure you wouldnt have to rely on video clips of niche acts, to attempt to re-affirm anything.. whats next.. you gonna post a clip of Fat Boys, saying something about how hip-hop changed in the 90s..?
i also just realized, you said ATCQ was around in the 80s.. they didnt drop until 1st quarter of 90.. im just going to conclude you have no idea wtf you're even talking about..![]()
1)"niche" acts? all of hip hop were "niche" acts in the 80's
2) first off all i BOLDED and specifically said THE ONES SELLING RECORDS/MAKING $$$
the top hip hop artists of 1995 was Bone and Pac; I never said that lyrical hip hop was DEAD, i said it wasn't making that $$$ - I own all of Mos Def/Talib/Rawkus compilation albums
3) That's my bad, I thought that Bonita applebaum dropped in '88-89 - honest mistake...funny though, when i used the example of the Native Tongues movement you're silent.
you've been waiting on my to slip up so you can pounce? really? that's how you debate?![]()
all those acts i named.. were making money.. they were touring regularly, and doing some of the biggest shows back then.. again.. you werent around like that..
all 80s acts were not "niche".. Run-DMC, BDP, Eric B & Rakim, LL.. were far from niche.. thats absurd to even put those dudes in the same discussion as Kid & Play, or Kwane..
Native Tongues werent around in the 80s..the met & formed, in the early 90s..
look.. you just dont know what youre talking about, man..@ someone who has time to go back & forth with you, about something you clearly have no real grasp about..
na...they're exaggerating to make a point. Again, most HIpHop in theearly 90's wasn't gangsta rap. Kid N Play might have seem corny at that time because they were somewhat of a HipHop + dance, novelty act. They were seen as corny in the way many saw Hammer, Tone Loc and Vanilla Ice as corny.
Ok. So why the fukk did so many NON gangsta rap hip hop succeed then? nikka u had Tribe. De La. Digible Planets. Das Efx. Lord Of The Underground. The Pharcyde. Souls Of Mischief. Pete Rock and CL Smooth. Gangstarr. Bran Nubian. Busta Rhymes, Common Sense. Queen Latifah. Arrested Development. Rakim. LL Cool J. KRS One. Heavy D. And the list goes on and on. All managed to make noise and succeed in the 90s. It's a full of shyt excuse for certain acts who got looked at as corny eventually. And Kid N Play ended up being more liked for their movies than their music.
alright, let's look at some hiphop from the early 90's and see how much was "Gangsta" or albums that didn't pop because they were "gangsta"
