Despite what you think of Kaepernick, and i have my critiques of his methods and personal choices, I think seeing how powerless he ended up being when shyt got real shows that these last 30 years of pretending pro athletes are these leaders with voices and access was not only a lie, but its a facade upon which we have been lead to rely upon instead of building independent institutions.
In the last 10 yrs, has any institution shown how powerless they are, more than pro sports?

Take it a level higher and a key point of the 2020s thus far is how ineffective black entertainers (athletes, musicians, actors) are as leaders period. Not that this is new - Malcolm pointed this out over 55 years ago.
Another one is that the decline of the Church’s influence and use as a rally point in the black community (and relevance to younger people) is kind of a disaster. And I say this as an agnostic person.

We tried so hard to be integrated and accepted by the mainstream that we thought our representatives/athletes would be just as powerful. A couple movie roles and endorsements and they thought they made it...
What THEY understand that we finally understand is that their athletes know their role as mascots. Our entertainers think they're leaders. THEIR entertainers know where they are in the hierarchy of power e.g. they have actual experts to represent them. OUR entertainers think they're at the top.

Did these companies make more money with black athletes pushing the boundaries? Yes. Undoubtably.
However, the money these athletes made let them think they had more power than they really do.

In no other field do they let people in their late 20s/early 30s represent them. For some reason, they wheel out athletes to speak for black issues. And its because we have no real representatives in business, academia, or politics that can be respected and elevated.
