Simpsons - it's quite easy to tell that the writers gave a shyt about the characters, the arcs, keeping the plot in order and course the jokes. The jokes themselves seem quite effortless and layered. But regarding the other aspects I mentioned, the care for characters shows in how there are much more memorable episodes from prime Simpsons rather than prime FG.

Like if I said Marge's dress you'd remember the episode discussing the difficulty of class and acceptance that Marge struggled with; Bonestorm you'd remember Bart struggling with the temptation of selfishness (through a lens of childish greed and excitement) and morality (through the lens of parental loyalty); 'Do It For Her' you'd remember Homer's acceptance of sacrificing his happiness for the greater good (though this comes at the end the way I remember it).

Family Guy tried this a little, but really they quickly gave it up for plots that go nowhere so that they can deliver a barrage of jokes. The only good characters FG has are Stewie and Brian, so course their better episodes have them as the protagonists (Road to series), but the writers still made them too edgy for the audience to resonate with them and thus consider the stories great.

Family Guy-Less politically correct, more abrasive, sillier and the physical comedy (peter and the chicken fighting, stewie beating up bryan bc he didn't pay him back his money). and because of Brian and Stewie . And at least Family Guy had a black family that interacts with the main characters on a regular basis.

family guy by a slight edge cause there's a few scenes I still remember where i was at when I watched them...some of those legit, stomache hurt from laughing moments

particularly when I first saw Stewie beat Brian ass for not paying off a bet in time

to me, the simpsons prime were the first 10 seasons.

i will give family guy credit where it's due, they did have an upper hand at times. now a days, i just don't give a damn about watching either shows. i still watch south park because i always felt that show was more relevant when it comes to addressing todays society.

simpsons HD is awful and it is too polished. i dont mind the first 10 seasons in HD.. they look real nice..

Homie. First 9 or 10 seasons of the Simpsons is arguably not only the best sitcom ever but the best show ever. Period.

The satire of suburban America and the nuclear family, the cleverness of the jokes, the actual philosophy put forth and the earnestness. The Simpsons could not only be funny but very emotional and resonant and made 2D characters fully human. Family guy isn’t aiming for that at all. And its jokes are easy to see coming from a mile away. Meanwhile some of the best Simpson jokes are quick asides from left fukking field.

“No more mockery of your name, Mr. Glasscock”
“Joey joe joe jr shabadoo”
“Dental plan, Lisa needs braces”
“Welcome to itchy and scratchy land where nothing can possibBlY go wrong”

Football in the groin
Sideshow bob roberts

I mean the quality of episodes for 9 or 10 years is staggering.

And the show always, even now in its inconsistent years, has something to say. Whether it’s about religion politics or pop culture. Last Sunday’s episode was all about good people going to heaven if they aren’t Christian so you got 22 min exploring what it means to be good and how ones goodness has nothing to do with their religious beliefs.

They’re still swinging for the fences
