The allegedly “super drunk” driver who crashed his car early Sept. 17 morning in northeast Minneapolis, Minnesota, instantly killing his Indian American girlfriend, has a history of driving offenses, including a previous hit and run, according to prosecutors.
Ria Patel, 20, a business major going into her junior year at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, was instantly killed when her boyfriend, Michael Laurence Campbell, careened his red Ford Focus into a stoplight, completely crushing the passenger side of his car.
Campbell then reportedly fled from the scene of the accident; Patel was crushed by the impact, and pronounced dead at the scene by law enforcement officials.
In the criminal complaint against Campbell, the Hennepin County, Minnesota prosecutor’s office reported that a witness had seen Campbell exiting the car and running towards a McDonalds. The witness called 911 to report the crash, but did not know that Patel was still in the car. A second witness saw Patel’s body; the first witness called 911 again to report an injured passenger.

Campbell has been charged with two felony counts of criminal vehicular homicide and for leaving the scene of the collision he caused. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years or a $40,000 fine, if convicted on both counts.
In a statement announcing the charges, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman noted: “In his short driving career, Michael Campbell has acquired a list of speeding, careless driving and hit-and-run charges.”
Campbell has five prior convictions for serious speed. He has also been convicted of possessing marijuana in a car, failing to stop at a stop light, and reckless driving. At the time of the accident, Campbell was on probation from a Jan. 10 hit and run. He was charged with a misdemeanor in that case.
Campbell is being held on $250,000 bail in Hennepin County, Minnesota Jail.
