This is the home of the girl who delivered a baby last month after being raped, allegedly by a priest at the local parish. Where a grieving mother laments the “disgrace” that has tainted the family. And where a heart-broken father had to falsely admit that he had raped his own daughter to “protect the priest and the Church” in what is now being described as the worst sex scandal in the history of Kerala’s Catholic establishment.

Last week, police arrested Fr Robin Vadakkuncheril, 48, of Mananthavady diocese, on charges of raping the minor in his parish at St Sebastian’s Church in Kottiyoor. On Thursday, a court in Thalassery allowed police custody of the accused through the weekend.

But at this home on a hill, that’s of little consolation to the middle-aged couple and their five minor children. “The priest betrayed our family and our faith in the Church. After my daughter delivered the baby, he wanted someone to take responsibility for the birth. How could I find someone for this job? Finally, I had to falsely state that I was the father of my daughter’s baby. As a believer, I also wanted to avoid the disgrace falling on the priest and the Church,’’ says the father, a farm labourer.

“But I realised the seriousness of the crime after police arrested me as the rapist of my own daughter. They told me that I would be jailed for several years. That was when I revealed the name of the priest,’’ he says. “Robin paid the hospital bill of Rs 30,000 for the delivery and promised to do any penance for his sin. But he betrayed my daughter by trying to escape from India,” says the father, before denying allegations that the family had accepted money from the priest to hush up the rape.

This is disgusting, but why do you only post these negative church stories and attribute that to Christianity and God and never the stories about the gangbangers who left the lifestyle or the countless examples of people who actually turned their life around? I can easily go grab stories about what went on in atheist countries such as the communist countries and put that as the face of atheism.

religion is such a powerful weapon...:wow:

Karl Marx was spot on about religion...

Man makes religion, religion does not make man. Religion is, indeed, the self-consciousness and self-esteem of man who has either not yet won through to himself, or has already lost himself again. But man is no abstract being squatting outside the world. Man is the world of man – state, society. This state and this society produce religion, which is an inverted consciousness of the world, because they are an inverted world. Religion is the general theory of this world, its encyclopaedic compendium, its logic in popular form, its spiritual point d’honneur, its enthusiasm, its moral sanction, its solemn complement, and its universal basis of consolation and justification. It is the fantastic realization of the human essence since the human essence has not acquired any true reality. The struggle against religion is, therefore, indirectly the struggle against that world whose spiritual aroma is religion.

Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people.

The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is the demand for their real happiness. To call on them to give up their illusions about their condition is to call on them to give up a condition that requires illusions. The criticism of religion is, therefore, in embryo, the criticism of that vale of tears of which religion is the halo.

because the tangible negatives of christianity outweigh the tangible positives :ehh:

it's great that people turn their lives around; but for all you and they know, the story is fake :yeshrug:

The fact that he doesn't even realize it brings far MORE disgrace on the church to show that he :cape: for a molester like that. :snoop:

Those of ya'all who haven't spent much time in Asia don't realize that it's like this all over. It's a shame-based culture - don't have shyt to do with religion. EVERYONE, no matter what religion they belong to (or don't) is clannish as fukk. Whether it's the family, or the faith, or the tribe they have to protect, they'll do anything to keep shame from falling on whatever clan they hold most dear.

There are stories all the times of brothers killing sisters who have brought shame on the family, wives caping for their molester husbands, whole societies trying to suppress information about abuse rather than doing anything to fix it...they'll do some scary shyt to avoid bring shame down.

The USA is supposedly a "guilt-based" culture, so Americans do whatever they can to show that they're right and the other guy is wrong, and the worst possible thing is to be shown that you did something wrong. So in the USA, you try to prove that you did the right thing, or hide the wrong things. But in Asia, they aren't as concerned with right and wrong as for what is "shameful" or not, and that leads them to jump through all sorts of fukking hoops to avoid being tainted by shame. It is a LOT more about public perception than about an underlying set of moral values.

"Atheism" is about far more than absenteeism of divinity. If that is all it were, then it would be meaningless and they'd have nothing to say in any other realm.

Look at Russia, or China, or especially Cambodia, where they persecuted and killed religious leaders or even just regular religious people in the name of state atheism.

Karl Marx was spot on about religion...

That quote is interesting because you break it down, and he's actually praising religion, he just is saying it is incomplete and not the final goal.

I actually agree with pieces of what he says, but not the conclusion or the means.
