Inside Uber and DoorDash's Push To Win the Most Expensive Ballot Race in California History

The companies, along with other gig-economy giants like Postmates and Instacart , have contributed nearly $200 million to persuade voters to approve a ballot measure that would exempt them from a new state law requiring businesses to reclassify contract workers as employees. That amount, the most ever raised for a California ballot question, according to Ballotpedia, suggests how pivotal the vote will be for companies reliant on a labor model in which workers are summoned at the touch of an app. The opposition, which has raised far less -- roughly $19 million, largely from labor unions -- says the companies have flourished on the backs of gig workers without providing them the protections that most employees receive. Victory for Uber, Lyft, DoorDash and others would let stand the companies' business models in their home state of 40 million people. If voters reject the Proposition 22 measure, the companies would be compelled to offer their drivers broad employment benefits, such as minimum wage, paid sick leave and unemployment assistance, that would weigh heavily on their already money-losing bottom lines.

TYRONE GA!
We talking store to household deliveries right?

not 18 wheeler nikkaz, correct?

A union driver delivering groceries to my house is a bit much esp if you can get a doordash cat to do it cheaper.

My people voted FOR prop 22. Unionization is always good.

Too late now - they fukked us for the next decade. Never will we get such another progressive piece of legislation in this state ever again.

i dont know tbh

more people take ubers than get unionized grocery delivery to their house. overall, id have to say this is a win

sucks for the drivers, but grocery delivery isnt deserving of a union when compared to the massive amount of drunk driving that uber prevents. they arent 10 year old kids being forced into coal mines

and they can still sign up again as non unionized drivers :yeshrug:

It sets the precedent against any future unionization legislature. This will have a domino effect among all forms of low skilled work - just watch as they expand into other work that is now done by full-time employees. Just look at the Vons article posted in this thread.

Even though they are “gig” workers - the status does not reflect the actual economy.

Most of the workers do DoorDash, Uber, etc. to pay bills and lack benefits to begin with.

This isn’t some utopian society where people become “gig workers” because they’re bored and have the expendable income to earn extra money.

I’m not going to go into further detail. The simple fact is - these companies can afford to give their WORKERS actual BENEFITS. It just would hurt their shareholders too much so that’s why they spent 200 million that COULD HAVE went to providing insurance and other protections into killing a bill. To make EVEN MORE money off the backs of people who get paid less than minimum wage.

i thought shyt like medicare for all is easy to give out :yeshrug: so their benefits problem should be solved quickly. "richest state ever" california isnt picking up the tab? why not?

i mean what the fukk. unions shouldnt have to justify why they deserve to be a union?

yeah, i didnt think so

unions are only worth as much as what they bring to the table :yeshrug:
For workers, not for billion dollar corporations that exploit them. Which is exactly who this bill was for. :unimpressed:
