Seems prohibitively expensive to deploy and a company like Amazon with almost no retail footprint won't make it pop anyway without a partner. Also what if people don't get approved for the transaction? Card maxed out or bad payment info.
There probably using there own stores for now just to test out the technology.
I think you wouldn't be able to make it in the store or once you are in and you pick up a item a computer monitor or speaker in the isle could inform you that you need to change your payment method (like it happens now when you buy something on there site and you don't have sufficient money or a expired card)
