I think in the history of mankind nobody has figured out how to ever use PIP

You need two independent video sources. Maybe you want to play the Playstation while someone else wants to see a particular scene on the Blu Ray player. Or maybe you want to watch Satellite TV/Cable while also browing the web. Select the main input and also select the PIP source. Done.
