If we're dealing with the bare bones level of increasing marginal utility as an ethical calculus, gang rape is a moral good. I don't know anyone that argues that on its own.

I love Utilitarianism and generally endorse it as a philosophy but with too small of a sample size or if you try to make too many specific rules by it you can end up with weird results like the one you mentioned. Cant apply categorical imperatives to it without there being some sort of nonsense

No. We seen what happens when totalitarian governments take over and it's anything but efficient. When there is some central body that controls everything, people lose any incentive to want to work harder because they know they won't be seeing the majority of the fruits from their labor.

We can do whatever we want... we just gotta freak it right.

But I think at this stage in human evolution that some kind of unified way of thinking/culture/ideology based on moral principles is necessary.

Yes, Singapore and to a much lesser extent, China has proven this is the case.

Free market capitalism, with social totalitarianism is the most promising model.

Imagine if drug smuggling in America held the same consequence as Singapore (automatic death penalty).

And Singapore embraces meritocracy in all aspects including breeding (highly educated people get incentives for child bearing).

a totalitarian social meritocracy is the ideal.

We have a taste of it here in the United States. You'd be hard pressed to find a more successful example of a hardline selection process than the US immigration system. African, Chinese and Indian immigrants are among the most civilized and successful groups in the entire untied states. It's because we only let in those who have proven their worth with a demonstrative skill set. the low crime rates of the 21st century Bay Area are a consequence of the government's forced hand in allowing only good people in our society (professional h1bs and student visas).

In the Silver Lining
:russ: This site wouldn't exist under that form .....gotta keep that social cohesion 1 Hunnid :sas2:, can't have jokers getting off the reservation .............................. although with the trajectory we are seeing with the internet right now ................. :francis:

Environmental utlitarianism has its place, but regulations/laws are many times expanded into other areas as a scapegoat for other agendas. We should protect the integrity of water supplies, air, prevent pollution from waste on the land. Yet, industry is giving a free pass time after time.

This is a good question at a very important time in history. All these trade "treaties" like TPP will be "governed" by corporations not people elected representatives. So what agenda do you think is more important in that form, protecting the people or protecting profits? We are entering a period where countries are inclined to syncing not just trade, but infrastructure, and currency....supranational government like the European Union. Arguably it is easier in this form for commerce and logistics and movement of things if things are standardized over large geographic areas like the United States, so it has its advantages. Yet, it also makes it easier for monopolies and oligopolies to develop.........., if left fully unchecked you get TPP, etc.

Singapore?

It's 75% Chinese, 15% Malay and 10% Indian. Very similar to the United States.

And Taiwan is more Chinese than China. Not only in demographics but also in Taiwan's culture.
